St Elizabeths: Gutting A Kirkbride | 18 Images

In 2016, I had the privilege to make photographs during the gutting of the historic Center Building at Washington DC's mental hospital St Elizabeths.  While mental health services continue to be offered on the east campus, the older west campus is being transformed to the new headquarters of Homeland Security. Historic preservation rules required the exterior appearance of this long vacant building be preserved as its interior is rebuilt.  What a rare circumstance: five to seven stories of Victorian masonry with the odd and winding shapes typical of buildings in the Kirkbride-style completely hollowed out. Notable are the photographs toward the end wherein I set up cameras overnight to document the movement of stars overhead.
